Karwa Chauth, the festival in honor of Goddess Parvati, is celebrated by married women all over India with utmost love, devotion, and a series of rituals. This year, the festival was on Friday, October 10, and preparation started a day earlier. On this day, wives traditionally keep a day-long fast for their husbands’ welfare and long life and break it only after moon sighting in the evening. But the festive mood took a tragic turn for one family in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur.
Uttar Pradesh Karwa Chauth Tragedy
As per a post posted by True Story, a 25-year-old girl, Babli, killed herself after an argument with her husband, Dharmpal, on the eve of Karwa Chauth. The post said that she quarreled with him for not buying her a saree for the festival. She had demanded her husband provide her with a new saree for the festive occasion, but he was stubborn about it. The denial soon turned into a raging battle between the couple. Soon after, Babli, furious over her husband’s denial of a new saree, took the drastic step. She was found hanging in her house, reportedly. Babli and Dharmpal were married for just 10 months.
Heated Argument Between Husband & Wife
The local news portal reported this incident on Thursday, October 9. The tweet that was posted on X (formerly Twitter) stated: “In Shahjahanpur, UP, wife Babli (25), furious with her husband after an argument about not receiving a saree on Karva Chauth, hanged herself. She had been married to Dharmpal for 10 months.”

Investigation Continues Related to Tragedy
Babli’s sudden and tragic death left her family members and neighbors in extreme shock. They immediately alerted the local authorities after discovering the unfortunate incident. The police arrived at the scene and carried out preliminary investigations. Following this, the woman’s body was sent for post-mortem examination. Early inquiries in this case suggest that Babli was frustrated over her disagreement with her husband, which may have triggered her drastic action. The awful incident caused shockwaves within the community.
