Instagram User Criticized for ‘Vitiligo-Inspired’ Makeup Look: ‘It’s Not a Costume!’

An Instagram user named Rex is facing intense backlash after posting a video where she simulated vitiligo using makeup. Vitiligo, as described by the Cleveland Clinic, is a condition that causes skin to lose its pigmentation, resulting in smooth white or light patches on the skin.

In the viral video, Rex painted parts of her face white to mimic vitiligo and then used makeup to cover it, portraying the condition as “pretty.” The video received a significant amount of criticism from viewers. In response, Rex clarified in the caption that she does not have vitiligo herself but intended to create art inspired by those who do and to normalize the condition. She acknowledged that her representation was imperfect and not reflective of the actual appearance of vitiligo. Rex explained that her goal was to raise awareness and highlight unique features rather than conceal them.

Despite her explanation, many viewers were not receptive. Comments included: “I get what you’re trying to do but vitiligo isn’t a costume. You don’t have it and can’t understand what it’s like to have it, so you can’t advocate for it. You can be an ally, but this isn’t it.” Another user, Sandy, remarked, “What a weird thing to post when you don’t have vitiligo.” A third commenter expressed frustration, stating, “As someone with vitiligo what the hell is this.” Stephanie McAteer added, “I didn’t know vitiligo could look like white acrylic paint.”

The video, initially shared in July, has recently gone viral, attracting both likes and a wave of critical reactions.
