The desire for a unique status symbol reached an unbelievable new height in India this week when the state of Haryana sold a VIP car registration number for a national record price.
The highly salable plate, HR88B8888, earned an astonishing final bid of ₹1.17 crore (Rs 11.7 million) in an online auction. This price makes it officially the most expensive car registration number ever purchased in the country, showing just how far luxury buyers will go to get a bespoke mark of exclusivity.
What makes the plate HR88B8888 so valuable?
It is a special combination driven by symmetry and numerology. The number eight is considered highly auspicious, and in many cultures, it usually denotes wealth and prosperity.
In this particular license plate, the appeal is even stronger because the capital letter ‘B’ is visually similar to the digit ‘8.’ This clever arrangement makes the entire sequence appear as a long, unbroken string of eights, which is highly prized by collectors and those who believe in lucky numbers.
Online Auction for Fancy Vehicle Numbers
The record sale was made during the state’s weekly online auction for fancy vehicle numbers. The craze for the HR88B8888 plate was palpable since the beginning of the auction process.
Though its base price for the series was a mere ₹50,000, the bid race took little time to shoot up. The price had crossed ₹88 lakh by noon on the day the bidding closed, and just hours later, it reached ₹1.17 crore.
According to officials, the number of applicants for this auction was much higher than usual, reflecting the increasing demand for such fancy registrations.

Registration Process for Unique Number Plate Auction
In Haryana, there is a structured weekly exercise on auctioning such fancy numbers online. Every Friday, registration for any special number starts, and the bid closes every Wednesday at 5 pm.
After the end of the auction, the winner has to pay the full amount, which is the winning bid, within five days.
Once the payment is successfully transferred, the registration plate HR88B8888 will be officially allocated to a vehicle registered at the Kundli Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Sonipat district, giving the automobile an unmatched identity on the roads.
