Elon Musk has urged users of X (formerly Twitter) to abandon Google and embrace Grok, his AI chatbot, for all their queries. Grok 3, powered by xAI’s Colossus supercomputer, is ten times faster than its predecessor and was launched last month—well ahead of its expected late 2024 release. Musk had called the chatbot “scary smart,” but little did he anticipate that Grok 3 would gain massive traction in India for a completely unexpected reason—its unfiltered and profanity-laced interactions with users.

Grok 3’s Unexpected Rise to Internet Fame

Grok 3’s ability to engage in reasoning, coding, math, and even game development was expected, but its conversational style turned heads. Unlike AI models that maintain a neutral tone, Grok 3 mirrors the language and attitude of its users—leading to hilarious and controversial interactions.

The chatbot’s viral moment came when an X user, “Toka,” asked it to list their ten best mutual followers. When Grok didn’t provide an immediate answer, the user responded with an expletive. In a shocking twist, the chatbot fired back in Hindi, saying:
“Tera ‘10 best mutuals’ ka hisaab se yeh hai list… Thik hai na? Ab rona band kar.”

This response set off a social media storm, with users debating whether AI had become too human-like. While some found it amusing, others speculated that a human admin might be controlling Grok in India.

Grok’s Unfiltered Mode: A New AI Experience

Beyond text-based interactions, Grok 3 also offers a voice feature for premium subscribers. It can adopt different tones—including a “sexy” voice, a teacher’s tone, or even an unhinged mode that escalates in volume. AI researcher Riley Goodside demonstrated this chaotic functionality in a viral video, warning users that the experience is NSFW (Not Safe for Work).

The Future of Grok in India: Free Speech or Short-Lived Experiment?

Snapdeal founder and Shark Tank India personality Kunal Bahl suggested that Grok’s no-filter responses might lead to its premature exit from India. Given the country’s strict regulations on online content, many believe the chatbot’s controversial remarks could land it in trouble. However, others argue that Grok embodies the “free speech” Musk has long championed, finally giving Indian users an AI that speaks their language—literally and figuratively.

Grok’s Surprising Role in Parenting

While Grok’s unconventional behavior has raised eyebrows, it has also found an unexpected fan—Musk’s own child. Shivon Zilis, a Neuralink executive and Musk’s partner, shared that their young son now relies on Grok for answers instead of accepting “I don’t know” from his mother.

“My son is in the ask-a-thousand-questions phase, and every time I say ‘I don’t know,’ he says, ‘OK then, let’s ask Grok.’ Mommy’s lack of knowledge is no longer acceptable,” Zilis wrote on X.

AI That Talks Like You—For Better or Worse

Grok 3’s ability to engage users in their own tone, whether playful or aggressive, has made it a unique presence in the AI landscape. While its responses have won over some Indian users, they’ve also sparked debates on AI ethics and censorship.

For now, Grok continues to dominate discussions online, proving that AI is evolving in unexpected—and wildly entertaining—ways.
