IIT Student Turns Down High-Paying Job with YouTuber in Bengaluru, But Why?

A YouTuber with over 1.5 million subscribers recently revealed that a candidate he offered a video editing position in Bengaluru backed out at the last minute, a situation he has faced before.

The applicant, Ishan Sharma, is a BSc in Computer Science student at IIT Madras. The YouTuber shared a screenshot of the email he received from the applicant, in which the candidate explained his reasons for declining the offer.

“Tried hiring a video editor. He signed the offer letter. And then sends me this email. Has happened with me multiple times,” Sharma posted on X, seeking advice from his followers on how to proceed.

In the email, the IIT Madras student explained that he had given considerable thought to the job offer but ultimately decided against it. “The main reason is that leaving IIT campus at this stage in my life isn’t the right choice for me. I want to at least complete one or two more years here. This is my final decision. It won’t change,” he stated. He also emphasized that Sharma’s offer was “excellent” and that his decision was not based on financial considerations.

Reactions on X to Ishan Sharma’s post varied. Some users suggested that the IIT student may have turned down the offer due to a low salary. “Not a hater but, I’ve heard from a few guys that you pay quite low to editors considering your brand value. Could that be the reason?” commented user Bablu Sharma.

“You honestly pay very less, Ishan. Ask me how I know this? Some of the editors from your team were my friends; they quit you to join my team because of the money they were getting,” added video editor Sahil Gondhedekar.

Several other users questioned why the YouTuber was considering hiring an IIT student for a video-editing role. One user suggested, “Go for professionals, pay them a good salary. They will stick. These college kids change their mood every hour.”
