A hoodie that was once owned by Mark Zuckerberg during Facebook’s early days has sold for a staggering $15,875 during an auction. The black Alternative hoodie, which is bespoke with Facebook’s 2010 mission statement inscribed on the inside lining, well surpassed its target price of $1,000 to $2,000.

Julien’s Auctions held the sale on Thursday as part of its “Spotlight: History and Technology” auction. The hoodie included a note, in the hand of the Meta creator, making it even more valuable. The note, typed on Facebook letterhead, said, “One of my favorite old-school Facebook hoodies. I wore this all the time in the early days. It even has our original mission statement on the inside lining. Enjoy! — Mark Zuckerberg.”

The identity of the buyer is not revealed, but the hoodie attracted a lot of attention, with 22 bids placed on it before the sale.

A Hoodie Full of History

This hoodie is historically significant because Zuckerberg wore it often in 2010—the same year he was Time’s Person of the Year. It was also the year that the biographical drama The Social Network came out, detailing Facebook’s ascension.

As per the auction listing, the history behind the hoodie is well-documented. Various reports state that the consignor had first purchased it on Facebook Marketplace, where Zuckerberg had posted it to mark the social media giant’s 20th anniversary.

Proceeds to Support Education in Texas

Aside from its vintage and collectible appeal, the auction of the hoodie had a philanthropic motive. The auction proceeds will fund extracurricular activities of school children in Texas so that Zuckerberg’s keepsake can do some good.

This historic sale showcases the lasting legacy of Facebook’s history and the importance of computer history in pop culture and collectibles.
