A birthday party in Hanoi, Vietnam, became a horrifying experience when a woman was burned by an exploding balloon during photo opportunities. The incident, which occurred on February 14, recently went viral after Giang Pham posted her ordeal on social media.

Giang recalled that the celebration was held at a restaurant filled with many balloons. To complement the celebratory atmosphere, she purchased more balloons to carry along while posing for photographs. Near the end of the celebration, she was on stage with the birthday cake in one hand and the balloons in the other.

In a flash, the balloons touched the burning candles on the cake, and there was an instant explosion. Her face was severely burned by the flames.

Startled and in agony, she dropped the cake and balloons immediately, covered her face with her palms, and dashed into the bathroom. She splashed her face with water to ease the burning before being rushed to the hospital, Baohaiduong said.

“The accident occurred six days ago but today I had the time to look at how the balloon popped and I was burned,” Giang said.

No Permanent Scarring

She became traumatized after the accident, which did not allow her to watch any recordings of what occurred. “I wept the whole day because I could not understand my life and profession would be once burned on the face like this,” she recounted.

Physicians treated her injuries as second- and first-degree burns, but they assured her that she would not have any permanent scars. Nevertheless, they told her that it could take months for her skin to return to its original color.

It was later discovered that the balloons she bought contained highly flammable hydrogen gas. Giang pointed out that the vendor did not inform her of the danger, perhaps because the demand for balloons is higher during Valentine’s Day.

Looking back at the incident, she added, “When the balloon burst, the fire started burning higher and engulfing all the cluster of balloons the restaurant had arranged. Fortunately, these balloons had regular air in them, or else it might have resulted in a huge fire.”
