A shocking Brazilian medical case published in the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports found that a 54-year-old man was brought into the hospital with a 2 kg dumbbell in his rectum. He presented with abdominal pain, nausea, and constipation for two days prior before coming in.
Imaging examinations revealed that the gym equipment was lodged in the rectosigmoid area, the junction of the rectum and colon. This site rendered removal especially risky and tricky due to poor access and risk of damage to adjacent tissues.
Even though the patient did not indicate the reason he inserted the dumbbell, medical literature indicates that such occurrences are usually related to sexual experimentation or gratification. Insertion of foreign bodies into the rectum is a well-documented but dangerous activity that often results in emergency department visits.
Medical staff treat such cases with a non-judgmental style, giving priority to patient safety over assumptions. The initial objective is safe extraction, usually performed via transanal removal under anesthesiology. In case of failure, manual extraction or surgery will be necessary.
After object removal, physicians usually recommend psychological or psychiatric evaluation. This identifies underlying patterns of behaviour and avoids repeated risky behaviour in terms of unsafe insertions in the future.
Experts vehemently advise against self-removal, which can cause internal bleeding, perforation, or serious infection. These complications can become life-threatening if not treated by a doctor immediately.
This strange case reminds us of the difficulty physicians encounter with rectal foreign body emergencies. It also highlights the need for compassion, professionalism, and patient confidentiality when dealing with sensitive medical cases.
