Mumbai police announced on Friday that the city has been placed on high alert after receiving a threatening call stating there are 34 human bombs carrying 400 kg of RDX, which can shake the entire city.

This is not the first time such threats have been made. But, once again, it has reminded citizens of the lurking threat of terrorism. While the police force is vigilant in tackling such situations, citizens must understand the primary measures to take in a violent situation.

Have you ever wondered if you witness an explosion near you, and survive it? What will be the next steps for you? One could be running for your life. However, taking measures as a survivor can help save countless lives of those around you affected by the explosion. Here's what you can do:

Primary Response

If a blast occurs near you, don't panic. Take the first few seconds to defend yourself. Drop to the ground, shield your head and protect vital organs from debris.

After the first shockwave is over, be very cautious of the secondary explosions. Quickly assess your surroundings for hazards like fire, falling glass, or unstable structures.

Check for Injuries

Even if you feel fine, check yourself for injuries. Sometimes, the adrenaline rush mutes the pain, apply pressure on bleeding wounds and use improvised bandages.

Move to a safer location and stay away from vehicles or suspicious objects like handbags, briefcases, suitcases, etc., as they could carry additional bombs ready to blast. Never use elevators, use stairs or open routes.

Alert the Authorities

Call the emergency number: 112 to ask for police, ambulance, and fire department. Provide clear details of the area, the number of injured people, and the overall situation. Authorities will establish control zones, so follow their instructions carefully.

Assist Others Without Compromising Yourself

It is human nature to help others, but be very mindful of your own safety and security while doing so. If you find victims near the 'safe location', lay them flat on the ground and apply pressure on their wounds. Elevate their legs if they're in shock.

Survivors are often shaken by the mental stress and PTSD. Seek the professional help of a psychologist and counsellor.

Hopefully, you will never come across such situations, but just in case you do. Try to remain calm and call the authorities for an organized rescue operation. Stay safe.
