In a disturbing case that has reignited the debate around women’s safety in public spaces. Model and digital content creator Soni Singh alleged that she was sexually harassed in broad daylight. According to Soni Singh, she was waiting for a cab at Rajiv Chowk in Gurugram on August 2 when this incident occurred. She claimed that a man approached her and began masturbating in full public view. She said that the police only took action after she shared her ordeal on social media.
Soni Singh, who has a following of nearly 40,000 on Instagram, had returned from Jaipur that morning and was waiting for her cab at around 11 am when the incident occurred. She shared a video later on her social media platforms. She detailed in the video how the man first began circling her and then exposed himself while staring at her.
“He was circling, and he was constantly staring at me. Initially, I ignored it, but then I noticed his pant was unzipped. He kept staring and started masturbating in front of me,” said Soni Singh in her video.
She further added, “He was very aware of what he was doing. He was making me feel uncomfortable. I felt disgusted.”
Soni Singh claimed that she immediately called the police and the women’s helpline, but didn’t receive any help. When she finally managed to speak with someone, they allegedly asked her to visit the police station to register an FIR, which further added to her distress.
>Feeling helpless, Soni booked another cab, reached home safely, and uploaded both her video and pictures of the alleged offender on her Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) accounts.
“I felt disgusted, unsafe, and helpless. Why are women still unsafe in public even during the day? Strict action is needed against such perverts. Public spaces must be safe for women,” she wrote.

Her social media post quickly went viral, drawing public outrage and calls for justice. The delay in action by Gurugram police prompted criticism over the system’s reliance on viral content rather than proactive law enforcement.
The Gurugram Police responded after two days, when the incident was widely shared online on August 6. A police spokesperson confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) had been filed and that efforts were underway to identify and apprehend the accused.
“An FIR has been registered and CCTV footage is being scanned to trace the accused,” said Police spokesperson Sandeep.
Despite the registration of the FIR, the delay raises serious questions about how effectively women’s safety is ensured, particularly in urban areas, and how much victims must rely on public outrage for justice.
