Handcuffed Man Convicted Of Child Assault Escapes US Courthouse: What Happened Next

In a dramatic turn of events, a handcuffed defendant made a desperate bid for freedom immediately following his conviction in a Maine courthouse. Nicolas Carter, 31, tried to flee from the Skowhegan courthouse moments after being found guilty of child assault. The incident unfolded on Wednesday and was captured on dramatic video footage.

Attempted Escape During Conviction Proceedings

Following his conviction for aggravated assault against a 14-month-old child, a Class A felony, Carter made a sudden and chaotic escape attempt. Despite being restrained in handcuffs, he leapt over the bar and bolted from the second-floor courtroom. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with Carter navigating down the stairs and through the main hallway.

Skowhegan’s town manager recounted the scene to the Portland Press Herald, saying, “All of a sudden, we hear this huge bang. Crash. Boom. This guy comes running down the stairs, handcuffed or shackled, trying to escape. He’s gripping the railing, jumping three stairs at a time. His feet weren’t shackled.”

Quick Action by Jurors and Detective

Carter managed to exit the courthouse and cross the street before he tripped and fell, giving chase to the pursuing detective and two jurors. The quick thinking of these individuals led to Carter being captured and detained without further incident.

Following his recapture, Carter was taken back into custody. He has to now face an additional charge of escape. The Portland Press Herald reported that Carter will be held at Somerset County Jail as he awaits sentencing, scheduled for next month.

Conviction and Sentencing

Carter’s attempted escape occurred after he was convicted during a three-day trial at Somerset County Superior Courthouse. The verdict concluded his trial for aggravated assault, and he is set to receive his sentencing next month, as stated by Chief Deputy Mike Mitchell.

This dramatic incident highlights not only the intense emotions surrounding high-profile court cases but also the crucial role of quick-thinking individuals in maintaining courtroom security.
