French Woman ‘Drugged’ And ‘Raped’ By 72 Men: ‘Shame Must Change Sides’

Gisele Pelicot, a 72-year-old French woman, has made the courageous decision to waive her legal right to anonymity in a harrowing case that has stunned France. Gisele faced her alleged abusers in court on Monday, supported by her adult children, as feminists gathered outside the courtroom in solidarity.

A Brave Move for Public Justice

Gisele’s choice to have the trial conducted in public has garnered widespread admiration on social media. On the platform X, numerous users have praised her bravery, calling her an inspiration for facing her trauma openly. Her decision to go public is seen as a powerful stand against the shame often associated with sexual violence.

The Disturbing Case Unveiled

The case revolves around Gisele’s husband, Dominique Pélicot, a 71-year-old former EDF employee, who is accused of orchestrating a decade-long series of rapes. Dominique allegedly drugged his wife with sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medication, then invited strangers from online chatrooms to assault her. The assaults occurred between 2011 and 2020 in their French village of Mazan.

Prosecutors allege that around 92 rapes were committed by 72 men, with 51 of the attackers identified so far. Dominique Pélicot himself filmed the assaults, further compounding the horror of the situation.

Trial Details and Public Support

The trial, which commenced with French woman Gisele’s public appearance, is set to be fully transparent, as per her request. Presiding Judge Roger Arata granted her wish for “full publicity” until the trial’s conclusion. Gisele’s lawyer, Antoine Camus, highlighted the significance of this decision, stating that opting for a public trial counters the attackers’ desire for secrecy. Gisele’s other lawyer, Stéphane Babonneau, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that “shame must change sides.”

Online Reactions and Support

The public response to Gisele’s bravery has been overwhelmingly supportive. Users on X have expressed their horror at the case and admiration for Gisele’s strength. Comments range from shock and sympathy to calls for severe punishment for the perpetrators.

Gisele Pelicot’s decision to face her abusers publicly and the ensuing trial are pivotal moments in this deeply disturbing case. Her bravery has not only brought attention to the severe injustices she suffered but has also set a precedent for handling such cases with the transparency and respect they demand.
