Navi Mumbai’s wetlands have become a stunning pink spectacle as thousands of Greater and Lesser flamingos flock to the area. The colorful birds form a spectacular visual treat, attracting widespread attention on social media. The Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary, a critical ecological center, is home to this annual migration, providing the birds with a secure habitat and rich food sources.
Flamingos Arrive with the New Year
Each winter, flamingos migrate in from Gujarat and other places and flock to the wetlands in Navi Mumbai, rich as they are with algae and mudflats, the ideal feeding site. This season, their time was such that they came about the New Year, laying the ground for another season of existence in harmony for nature and urban life.
A viral clip documenting the phenomenon presents a huge colony of flamingos flying high above the water, their rosy colors gleaming against the serene blue backdrop.

Urban Designs Inspired by Flamingos
Besides their contribution to the ecology, flamingos have drawn inspiration for city ventures. The New Palm Beach in Navi Mumbai, a luxury residential complex, takes cues from the serenity and beauty of these birds. The scheme looks to combine contemporary aspirations with the tranquility of nature, and provide an untethered conjunction of urban convenience and peacefulscapes.
Amazon’s Investment in Mangrove Restoration
In a significant conservation effort, Amazon is set to invest $1.2 million to restore mangrove forests and mudflats—key feeding grounds for Mumbai’s iconic flamingo population.
Through a partnership with Hasten Regeneration, a social enterprise dedicated to ecosystem restoration, the initiative will support mangrove plantations in Gujarat and clean-up efforts along Thane Creek’s settlements.
The money is sourced from Amazon’s $100 million Right Now Climate Fund, which supports global programs that deal with climate resilience, biodiversity, and conservation.
