A 7.7-magnitude earthquake rocked Mandalay, Myanmar, on Friday, causing shocks as far as Bangkok and Chiang Mai in Thailand. The earthquake resulted in extensive damage, with footage spreading of ruined structures in the two countries. A particularly jarring clip showed the destruction of the ancient Ava Bridge, a key monument connecting Myanmar’s Ava and Sagaing areas. Also destroyed during the earthquake was an as-yet-uncompleted building in Bangkok’s Chatuchak Market.
Ava Bridge Collapses
Constructed in 1934 by the British colonial authorities, the Ava Bridge consisted of 16 spans and spanned the Irrawaddy River, connecting the Ava and Sagaing regions. The earthquake whose epicentre was approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Monywa in the center of Myanmar shook the nation. Barely 12 minutes after the first jolt, a powerful 6.4-magnitude aftershock hit Myanmar’s Sagaing division, adding to the destruction.
