A domestic worker’s ambition to become a social media influencer resulted in her arrest by the Delhi Police. Neetu, from northwest Delhi’s Rajapuri, was taken into custody after stealing jewellery worth several lakhs from her employer’s home in Dwarka. Her goal? To purchase a DSLR camera, crucial for her growing YouTube and Instagram pursuits.
Employed just a few days prior to the theft on July 15, Neetu swiftly gained the family’s trust. The 30-year-old used false residential documents and information to evade detection. Her main aim was to distance herself from her harsh reality and dive into the virtual world of social media.
However, her scheme fell apart as police caught her just as she was about to escape with the stolen jewellery. Neetu was arrested by the anti-burglary cell of the Dwarka district police after a complaint was filed regarding the theft of two gold bangles, a silver chain, and a pair of silver anklets from the victim’s residence.
Despite her attempts to avoid capture, including turning off her phone and using multiple autorickshaws to change locations, the police tracked her down at Rajapuri Chowk. An officer apprehended Neetu while she was packing her bag to leave Delhi.
A senior police officer stated, “Neetu initially denied her involvement in the theft but later broke down. She admitted that her interest in social media drove her to commit the theft, aiming to fund the purchase of a DSLR camera worth lakhs for creating high-resolution content on her channels.”
Neetu, originally from Behrod, Rajasthan, explained that her difficult circumstances, including an abusive marriage, led her to seek fame on social media. Prior to this incident, she had no criminal record. Neetu is now facing charges related to theft.
