Do You Have Lower Back Pain? Avoid This Food Item At All Cost

If you’re struggling with lower back pain, you might need to rethink your diet, particularly avoiding corn and its derivatives. Dr. Jeff Winternheimer DC advises steering clear of corn-based products like syrup, sugar, chips, and oil, as these may exacerbate your condition.

Why Processed Corn Can Worsen Back Pain

Dr. Siddhant Bhargava, a fitness and nutritional scientist and co-founder of Food Darzee, explains that while natural, unprocessed corn is healthy, processed corn can be problematic. “Processed corn can cause an inflammatory response in the body that significantly contributes to pain, including lower back pain,” Dr. Bhargava says. This inflammation can slow down the healing process and make lower back pain worse. Moreover, processed corn can lead to rapid insulin spikes, increased inflammation, and weight gain, which adds additional strain to the spine.

Benefits of Whole Corn and Alternatives

Dr. Bhargava notes that whole, unprocessed corn retains essential nutrients like B vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, and antioxidants, which can be beneficial when consumed in moderation. However, the health benefits are lost in processed forms of corn.

Dietary Tips

An anti-inflammatory diet can help alleviate lower back pain. Include a variety of fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, such as berries and dark leafy greens. Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, like fatty fish (salmon, mackerel), nuts, and seeds, should also be added. Opt for whole grains over refined ones for blood sugar stabilization, and incorporate protein from legumes like beans and lentils, which provide fiber without the inflammatory effects of red meat.

Additional Recommendations

Adding turmeric or ginger to your meals can offer powerful anti-inflammatory benefits. Additionally, drinking plenty of water helps keep the body hydrated, reducing muscle stiffness and promoting overall well-being.
