A massive explosion shook Detroit’s east side on Saturday afternoon, destroying a home and spreading fires that engulfed adjacent homes. The blast occurred about 4 PM on the 19400 block of McCormick Street, close to Moross Road and northwest of I-94.

The power of the blast destroyed the house, setting it into flames and filling the air with heavy plumes of smoke, which brought a large response from fire units and police. Several homes near the area where the explosion occurred caught on fire, officials said, and at least three houses suffered damage in total.

Take a look:

Emergency responders said that one individual who was in the home that exploded survived but got injured. At 6:30 PM, responders were continuing to search for another person who could have been in it at the moment of the explosion. Fortunately, no individuals were in the two other houses that were destroyed when the fire engulfed them.

As a precautionary measure, DTE Energy cut power to the damaged properties to protect the public. In the meantime, officials continue to probe the exact cause of the explosion, evaluate the damage and scope of destruction, and closely survey the area.
