A flag decoration at RVITM Engineering College in Bengaluru has sparked controversy online. The design replaced the Ashoka Chakra with Karnataka’s map on the Indian tricolour. As a result, there were accusations of disrespecting the national flag.
Online Backlash
Many users criticized the design. One commented, “However, I feel wrong in this. You just replaced the Ashoka Chakra.” Another questioned, “Isn’t this defamation of the flag?”
NCC Cadet Defends the Design
In response, a third-year National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadet stepped forward. The cadet explained that the decoration was part of a traditional Republic Day event. “This is a common activity conducted in the Republic Day Camp by DG NCC,” they clarified. The cadet added that designs often represent the respective state or directorate.
Clarifying the Intent
The cadet emphasized that the design wasn’t meant to undermine national symbols. “The intention was not to show that Karnataka is supreme or anything else accused in the comments. It was to represent us as part of this beautiful nation,” they said.
Criticizing the Poster’s Intent
The cadet also accused the original poster of trying to provoke outrage. “It seems that OP had an intention to rage-bait people. This is working, given the online hate speech against Karnataka, Kannadigas, and Bengaluru,” they stated.
Celebrating Unity and Discipline
The cadet emphasized that the event focused on unity. “We hosted Republic Day with flag hoisting, cultural programs, and a patriotic song by first-year cadets,” they explained. “The motto of NCC is Unity and Discipline. Why would we want to divide instead?”
Mixed Reactions
Some users familiar with NCC traditions supported the cadet’s explanation. However, others remained critical, insisting that national symbols should be treated with respect.
