A viral video showcasing an eatery in Jakarta, Indonesia, where cobra meat is served as a delicacy, has caused a stir online. The video, shared by Indian Instagrammer Akash Chaudhary, shows a roadside stall where a cobra is slaughtered for food, with the meat being used to prepare various dishes, including noodle-like recipes and drinks made from cobra blood.
The incident, which took place during Akash’s trip to Jakarta, highlights the local practice of consuming cobra meat, which many believe offers strength and boosts immunity. Akash, visibly shocked by the practice, filmed the scene of the live animal being butchered and served as snacks to local customers. Among the offerings was a popular dish where people consumed cobra blood and meat, which they believed could enhance physical strength.
At the stall, one cobra was reportedly priced at 1,000 INR (approximately 200,000 Indonesian rupiah), a premium cost for the dangerous delicacy. The stall owner was seen grilling the snake’s meat, while some customers were seen sipping cobra blood, a practice that locals follow for its supposed health benefits.
Akash, who recorded the video, expressed his disdain for the practice, sarcastically commenting, “These people eat cobras believing that it adds strength to their body. But probably they haven’t seen good physique people from our Haryana or UP.” His video sparked outrage on social media, with many Indian viewers commenting about the cultural significance of cobras in Hindu mythology, where they are associated with Lord Shiva. Comments like “Har Har Mahadev” flooded the post, reflecting the widespread displeasure.
While some viewers were disturbed by the video, others criticised the practice for ethical reasons, questioning the morality of slaughtering live snakes for food. The video has led to an intense online debate about cultural differences and the ethics surrounding the consumption of certain animals.
This video has not only sparked outrage but also prompted important discussions about animal rights, local culinary traditions, and cultural practices. As the video circulates, the consumption of snake meat continues to stir heated discussions both in India and internationally.
