Brazilian Influencer Plans ₹16 Lakh Surgery To ‘Feel Like A Virgin Again’

Hymenoplasty, commonly referred to as hymen repair, is a cosmetic surgery where the torn edges of the hymen are stitched together using dissolvable stitches. While it’s primarily symbolic, the procedure is sought after for personal or cultural reasons.

Ravena Hanniely’s Decision

Ravena Hanniely, a 23-year-old influencer, has chosen to spend ₹16 lakh ($19,000) on this surgery. She describes it as more than just a medical procedure:

“It symbolises a fresh start in my personal and professional life,” said Hanniely.

She emphasized that the surgery is about self-esteem and a deeply personal choice, asserting:

“This is for my self-esteem and personal reasons that are important to me.”

Psychological and Ethical Considerations

Hanniely also highlighted the psychological benefits of hymenoplasty, saying:

“It’s about how a woman feels and what she wants for herself.”

However, experts caution against romanticizing the procedure.
A doctor warned:

“While it is a cosmetic surgery, it cannot restore actual virginity. The procedure comes with risks such as infections, scarring, minor bleeding, and irregular healing.”

The doctor added that informed consent is crucial, especially as these decisions often intersect with cultural and psychological complexities.

Criticism and Support

Despite criticism and concerns, Hanniely remains firm in her decision, calling for greater respect for individual choices:

“Unfortunately, not everyone can understand or support such intimate decisions. We need to stop judging and start respecting these choices.”

The Risks of Hymenoplasty

Medical professionals warn of the following risks associated with the procedure:

  • Infections: The sensitive area is prone to infections during the healing process.
  • Scarring: Improper healing can leave scars.
  • Bleeding: Some patients experience minor bleeding post-surgery.

The procedure also raises ethical debates, with critics questioning whether it perpetuates harmful societal pressures on women.

Conclusion

While hymenoplasty is a personal decision, it is essential to weigh its risks and implications. Ravena Hanniely’s case highlights the broader conversation about body autonomy and societal norms.
