A viral video on social media shows an under-construction flyover cutting through a resident’s balcony in Nagpur. The clip raised serious doubts about city planning and infrastructure design within the city.

The flyover in question forms part of the Indora-Dighori corridor within the Ashok Nagar area of the city, which is being constructed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

Flyover Not Touching Balcony, Clarifies Official

Reacting to the row, an official at NHAI said in a report to news agency PTI on Tuesday that the balcony is an encroached area. “Our flyover is not within the outer part of the balcony. The concerned balcony is an encroachment, and we have already issued a letter to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) asking them to dismantle it,” the official stated. He further stated that the encroachment would be cleared in a short while.

House Owner Disputes Encroachment Claim

The owner of the house, though, disputed the claim that a rotary beam of the flyover would be passing through the balcony area. “It’s going through a part of the balcony with no utility, it’s basically a no man’s land. The flyover is 14 to 15 feet above, and there is no safety concern,” the resident stated.

Footage of the accident, which went viral on the web, captures the beam of the flyover precariously close to the building, raising more questions regarding standards of construction and safety in residential areas.

A senior official of the NMC confirmed that the building was leased before to the landowner and added that municipal authorities are re-examining the terms of the lease. “Once it is confirmed that the status of the lease, action will be taken to vacate the premises, as per due procedure,” the official said.

The accident reignited controversy about the alignment of development projects in highly populated urban regions and the urgent need for more transparent land use policies and planning control.
