A baby boy born in Brazil has become the talk of the internet after his first photo went viral. The newborn was seen holding his mother’s intrauterine device (IUD), the same contraceptive coil meant to stop her from getting pregnant.

The baby, named Matheus Gabriel, was delivered at the Hospital Sagrado Coracoso de Jesus in Neropolis, Goias, according to the Mirror. His mother, Queidy Araujo de Oliveira, had been using the copper IUD for almost two years. The device is believed to be more than 99 per cent effective at preventing pregnancy.

What Is an IUD?

An IUD is a small, T-shaped device that doctors place inside the uterus to prevent conception. The copper in the device creates a hostile environment for sperm, making fertilisation unlikely. Depending on the type, an IUD can remain effective for five to ten years.

Unexpected Pregnancy and Health Challenges

Queidy discovered her pregnancy during a routine check-up. Doctors explained that removing the coil could endanger the baby, so it remained in place throughout the pregnancy.

Her pregnancy was not easy. She experienced bleeding and partial detachment of the placenta. Despite the difficulties, she managed to carry the baby safely until delivery.

A Viral Moment After Birth

Soon after the birth, attending doctor Natalia Rodrigues noticed the IUD. She placed it in the tiny hand of Matheus. A photograph taken in the delivery room showed the newborn clutching the device as if it were a small trophy.

The image quickly spread online. Rodrigues shared the photo on Instagram with a caption that read: “Holding my victory trophy: the IUD that couldn’t handle me!”

Mother and Baby Are Safe

According to reports, both Queidy and her baby are healthy and safe. The unusual birth story has drawn global attention and sparked conversations about contraceptive methods and their rare failures.

Medical experts stress that while IUDs are highly effective, no contraceptive is 100 per cent foolproof. This rare case highlights the unpredictable nature of pregnancy.

For now, baby Matheus and his mother are doing well, and the photo of him holding the IUD continues to capture hearts worldwide.
