A cat, weighing as much as a young child, was recently discovered living in the basement of a hospital in Perm, Russia. Named Kroshik, meaning “Crumbs” in Russian due to his insatiable snacking habits, he was found at a staggering weight of 17 kilograms. Kroshik was too heavy to walk when rescued by animal lovers.
Kroshik was fed by hospital staff with a diet consisting of bread crackers, soup, whiskey, and meat, leading him to become so overweight that he was immobilized. It was reported that the Matroskin Shelter’s vets could not perform an ultrasound on him due to his excessive fat layers.
The Matroskin Shelter described Kroshik’s condition as an “extremely rare case” where excessive feeding led to severe immobility. They noted, “He could be one of the top 5 fattest cats in the world.” Kroshik is now undergoing a rehabilitation program that includes hydrotherapy and kinesiotherapy 3-4 times a week.
A recent Instagram post from the shelter shows Kroshik making progress, with the cat slowly regaining the use of his legs and walking on a water treadmill.
The shelter remains hopeful for his continued improvement and recovery.
