Musa Hasahya Kasera, a 70-year-old man from the village of Mukiza in eastern Uganda, draws international attention due to his really large family.
Hasahya is not famous for some great accomplishment but for his incredible home life: he is the husband of 12 wives, the father of 102 children, and the grandfather of an unimaginable 578 grandchildren.
His large family unit has made him a local spectacle and a viral sensation on social media, where he was unofficially titled ‘The Person Who Produced the Most Children in the World.’
While the sheer numbers have attracted reactions ranging from awe to light-hearted humor—with one online commenter suggesting his family should be declared a “district” Hasahya’s reality is far from easy or uncomplicated.
Despite the attention, his life is dominated by immense and growing challenges of provision. He now openly admits that the responsibility for feeding, clothing, and educating his hundreds of descendants is overwhelming.

Hasahya Jumps into Polygamy
Hasahya took an early jump into polygamy and large family life. At 16, he married his first wife, and within the following years, the family expanded very rapidly. But over time, this has become financially unmanageable.
Recently, Hasahya himself revealed how badly he has struggled to bear the high cost of living that keeps a family now exceeding 680 people alive. He reportedly has issues remembering the names of his youngest children and many of his grandchildren, showing the practical challenges of maintaining such enormous kinship.
Hasahya Growing Family Becomes a Burden
In a recent plea, Hasahya has called on his wives to start using birth control, since the family has grown beyond his ability to provide for them properly.
His admission is a significant U-turn from the ambition of fatherhood into the harsh economic reality. The situation of the Mukiza villager is a real case study that invites attention to the mostly hidden aspects of poverty and large families in various parts of the world.
A Global Conversation The story of Hasahya has sparked a global conversation on the mix of traditional values, modern economics, and sustainable family planning.
His large family, though considered by some as a sign of great virility, gives emphasis to the urgent need for support and resources for basic necessities.
The community now looks at Hasahya’s situation not with awe but with concern for the welfare of his wives and hundreds of children and grandchildren relying on his dwindling resources.
