Cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli came together to unveil a memorial dedicated to their mentor on Tuesday, the late Ramakant Achrekar, in Mumbai. The occasion marked the birth anniversary of the esteemed coach, who had a profound influence on both players’ careers.
As part of the tribute, Kambli, though visibly unwell, emotionally sang a line from the classic Bollywood song ‘Sar Jo Tera Chakraye Ya Dil Dooba Jaaye.’ The moment was a touching reflection of Kambli’s deep respect for his former coach. Tendulkar clapped in admiration as Kambli finished the song, acknowledging his former teammate’s gesture.
Their emotional reunion captured the hearts of many. A viral video showed Tendulkar shaking hands with Kambli, who fumbled slightly while addressing the audience. Despite his discomfort, Kambli managed to end his speech with a simple, heartfelt message: “Love you, (Achrekar) sir.” The crowd responded with warm applause, recognizing the bond the two cricketers shared with their mentor.

The duo first gained national attention as schoolboys at Shardashram Vidyamandir in Mumbai. They set a record-breaking partnership of 664 runs in a Harris Shield match, a feat that made cricket fans sit up and take notice. Both scored unbeaten triple centuries, a remarkable achievement for the young players.
Tendulkar’s career evolved into one of the most illustrious in cricket history. Over 24 years, he played 200 Tests and 463 ODIs, breaking numerous records, including becoming the first player to score 100 international centuries. His name is synonymous with cricketing greatness, and his legacy continues to inspire millions worldwide.
Kambli’s career, in contrast, was brief but impactful. After a promising start, including two double centuries in Tests, his career plateaued. He played only 17 Tests and 104 ODIs. Despite not reaching the heights many had expected, Kambli’s early performances remain memorable. His total of 1,084 runs in Tests and 2,477 runs in ODIs, including two centuries, showcases his potential, even though his career was cut short.
Both Tendulkar and Kambli owe much of their success to the guidance of Achrekar, whose influence shaped them into the players they became. The unveiling of the memorial was a fitting tribute to a coach who helped mold two of India’s most talented cricketers. It was not just an homage to Achrekar’s memory but a celebration of their enduring bond and the lasting impact of his teachings.
