In her first public statement since the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dismissed her appeal against disqualification from the Paris Olympics, ace wrestler Vinesh Phogat expressed deep gratitude toward the Indian Olympic Association (IOA)-appointed medical team, particularly Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala. Vinesh described Dr. Pardiwala as “an angel in disguise sent by God” for his unwavering support and medical expertise that helped her overcome multiple injuries.

Vinesh, who had become the first Indian female wrestler to reach an Olympic final after winning all her bouts on Day 1 of the women’s 50kg event, faced a heartbreaking disqualification after being found overweight by 100 grams. Despite taking extreme measures to cut weight, she was disqualified, and her subsequent appeal to CAS was dismissed, ending her hopes of winning an Olympic medal.

In an open letter shared on her social media accounts, Vinesh praised Dr. Pardiwala for his dedication and kindness, recalling how he had operated on her multiple times and played a crucial role in her recovery from serious injuries. She also expressed her appreciation for the entire support staff, including Chef de Mission Gagan Narang, the Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ) program, and other key individuals who had supported her through challenging times.

Despite her retirement announcement following the disqualification, Vinesh hinted at “unfinished” goals and a lingering desire to continue wrestling, though she stopped short of reversing her retirement decision. She acknowledged the disappointment of not achieving her Olympic dreams but emphasized her resolve to keep fighting for what she believes in.

Vinesh’s disqualification and the CAS appeal dismissal have been a significant blow, but her heartfelt words of gratitude reflect her deep respect for those who stood by her in her journey.
