A private van carrying school children overturned on Wednesday, injuring eight students. Four of the injured are in critical condition and have been hospitalised. The accident occurred near Sector- 25 police outpost.
Upon receiving the information, DCP Himadri Kaushik arrived at the hospital. The parents of the injured students and the school staff were informed about the incident. The van driver fled the scene after the accident.
The van involved in the accident belongs to a school owned by Mayor Kulbhushan Goyal. On Wednesday afternoon, the van was taking students home when it suddenly went out of control near Sector- 25. Despite the driver’s efforts to regain control, the van collided with a divider and overturned.
The accident caused panic among the young children. The people nearby quickly responded to the screams and broke the van’s windows to rescue the children. The injured were immediately taken to Sector- 6 Civil Hospital.
Parents who arrived at the Civil Hospital alleged that the driver was talking on the phone while driving. They claimed the van became unbalanced due to high speed, leading to the accident. The driver’s negligence is believed to be the cause of the incident.
District Education Officer Satpal Kaushik stated that all the children are safe and he is in communication with parents and doctors. According to the parents, several families had arranged for a private van to transport their children to and from school for convenience.
Kaushik emphasised that efforts will be made to ensure that all vehicles transporting children follow safety protocols.
