In a historic development, the United States and India have sealed the Strategic Framework for Human Spaceflight Cooperation, signifying a monumental leap in their space partnership. This agreement aims to foster deeper interoperability in space and paves the way for advanced training for Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) astronauts at the NASA Johnson Space Center. Notably, this marks the first-ever joint endeavor between NASA and ISRO astronauts at the International Space Station, underscoring the strengthening collaboration in space exploration.
With NASA’s involvement in training two Indian astronauts, including a mission to the International Space Station later this year, this agreement signifies a significant milestone. Furthermore, India’s ambitious space station, the Bharatiya Antariksha Station, is set to be constructed and operated by ISRO, with plans for completion by 2035. This station, smaller than the International Space Station, will be dedicated to microgravity experiments, orbiting the Earth at an altitude of approximately 400km.
The joint efforts also extend to exploring opportunities for India’s participation in the Lunar Gateway Programme, which represents a significant leap in human space exploration.
