US Backs Canada’s Serious Allegations, Calls for Indian Cooperation on Nijjar Investigation

The US has supported Canada’s serious allegations regarding the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, urging India to “cooperate” with Canada’s investigation. This diplomatic crisis escalated after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian government agents of being involved in Nijjar’s death in Canada. India has dismissed these allegations as “absurd” and “politically motivated.”

In response to the situation, Canada expelled six Indian diplomats, while India retaliated by expelling six Canadian diplomats, including Canada’s Acting High Commissioner, Steward Ross Wheeler.

US Department of State Spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the seriousness of Canada’s claims and expressed a desire for India to engage with Canada’s inquiry. He stated, “India has chosen an alternate path,” highlighting the need for cooperation between the two nations.

Miller refrained from commenting further on the allegations, deferring to the two countries for updates. However, he reassured that the US-India relationship remains strong, citing collaboration in various areas, including a shared vision for a free and prosperous Indo-Pacific. He noted that the US and India have a candid dialogue about concerns when they arise.
