The trailer for Imtiaz Ali’s new film ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’, featuring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, was unveiled on Thursday. The film narrates the previously untold true story of the iconic Punjabi singer. Diljit Dosanjh portrays ‘Chamkila,’ a leading artist of his time, who ascended from poverty to extraordinary fame in the 1980s with his influential music.

The trailer depicts a young man from a Punjab village, portrayed by Diljit Dosanjh, who is invited to perform at a local event. Despite his reluctance to be known as Chamkila, he goes ahead with the performance. His music captivates the village, particularly the women, though some take issue with the provocative lyrics. Eventually, he collaborates with the singer Amarjot Kaur.

Discussing the creation of Amar Singh Chamkila, Imtiaz Ali remarked “Stories of young musicians that challenge the norms of society, who see unprecedented success and then have violent ends is, unfortunately, a worldwide phenomenon. The life and times of Chamkila raised important questions for society but ultimately it is a celebration of the life of an artist, the story of a musician who could never give up his first love – music.”

Directed by Imtiaz Ali, ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ unveils the untold true story of Punjab’s original rockstar. Rising from poverty, he soared to immense popularity in the 80s through his powerful music, which incited anger in some quarters and ultimately culminated in his assassination at the tender age of 27.

The film ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ will be available for streaming on Netflix starting April 12. It is a production by Mohit Choudhary, Select Media Holdings LLP, Saregama, and Window Seat Films. The film’s soundtrack is accessible on Saregama.
