An increasing number of Canadians are advocating for the revocation of Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship due to his close association with U.S. President Donald Trump.
A parliamentary petition launched by British Columbia-based author Qualia Reed has gained substantial momentum, surpassing 150,000 signatures.
As first reported by The Canadian Press, the petition claims that Musk’s ties to Trump’s administration pose a threat to Canada’s national interests, citing the U.S. president’s repeated provocative remarks about Canada’s sovereignty.
Sponsored by New Democrat MP Charlie Angus, a known critic of Musk, the petition formally urges Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to revoke Musk’s Canadian passport and citizenship without delay.
The initiative follows Musk’s vocal support for Trump’s policies, including backing the administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), which has led to widespread job cuts in multiple U.S. federal agencies.
Allegations on Musk
Musk, who was born in South Africa and gained Canadian citizenship through his mother, who was born in Regina, is accused in the petition of “engaging in activities that go against the national interest of Canada.”
The petition also claims that, as an adviser to Trump, Musk has aligned himself with a foreign government that seeks to undermine Canada’s sovereignty.
Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of annexing Canada, describing it as a potential 51st U.S. state, while also proposing significant tariffs on Canadian goods.
These remarks have sparked widespread criticism among Canadians, especially after Trump reiterated his stance just before Canada’s national hockey team defeated the U.S. in a politically charged final on February 20.
The petition argues that Musk’s close association with Trump makes him complicit in these actions.
Musk’s involvement in Canadian politics has also drawn scrutiny. In recent months, he has used his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), to comment on Canadian affairs.
He has publicly praised Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre while mocking Trudeau, whom he referred to as an “insufferable tool.” His endorsements of right-wing political figures in Canada have further intensified the debate over his political stance.
Canadian citizenship: The Petition Process
Under Canada’s parliamentary petition rules, electronic petitions must collect a minimum of 500 signatures to be formally presented in the House of Commons and receive an official government response.
Reed’s petition has far exceeded this threshold, reaching approximately 157,000 signatures as of late Sunday, with the count continuing to rise.
While parliamentary petitions provide a platform for citizens to voice their concerns, they do not compel the government to take action. However, the overwhelming support for this petition reflects growing public unease over Musk’s influence in Canadian politics.
The House of Commons is set to reconvene on March 24, though there is speculation that a general election could be called before MPs return, potentially shifting attention away from the petition. Despite this, it remains a prominent issue in Canadian political discourse.
With the petition open for signatures until June 20, it has the potential to gain even greater momentum in the coming months.
Musk Speaks Up
Musk has yet to directly respond to the petition but remains actively involved in political discussions in both the US and Canada.
During a recent conservative event in Maryland, he waved a giant chainsaw in the air, seemingly joking about his role in the Trump administration.
Moreover, Musk recently boosted a post on X that stated: “Of course we support Doge! Those who don’t support it are unAmerican.”
