Ahead of the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his desire to strengthen cultural ties with India by promoting Indian films in Russia, which he described as highly popular among foreign cinema. Speaking before the summit, Putin acknowledged the widespread appeal of Indian movies in Russia, highlighting that they are aired continuously on a dedicated TV channel and are frequently screened across the country.
Putin also hinted at future collaboration between the two nations in the entertainment industry. He mentioned the possibility of offering incentives for Indian filmmakers to shoot in Russia, adding that the two countries would work together to find “common ground” to support such initiatives. The Russian president indicated that more discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the topic are expected in the near future.
Additionally, Putin noted that the Moscow International Film Festival had already begun showcasing films from BRICS countries and expressed enthusiasm for expanding partnerships with India, not only in cinema but also in pharmaceutical ventures.
In a broader discussion, Putin touched on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, acknowledging PM Modi’s concerns about the situation. Describing Modi as a “friend,” Putin appreciated India’s interest in peace negotiations, though he remarked that resolving the conflict remains challenging, citing NATO’s involvement as a complicating factor.
The comments come ahead of the upcoming BRICS Summit, scheduled for October 22-23, where Modi and Putin are expected to further discuss these cultural and geopolitical issues.
