US Vice President-elect, JD Vance, met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng on Sunday, a day before he and President-elect Donald Trump are set to be sworn into office. A statement from the Trump-Vance transition team said the meeting focused on a range of issues, including fentanyl, trade, and regional stability.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, an invitation recipient of Trump, was represented in the meeting by his Vice President Han. The conversation was held as a follow-up after a recent call between Trump and Xi, focusing on critical themes, TikTok, trade relations, and Taiwan. It was a first known conversation between the two heads of state following Trump’s electoral victory in November.

According to The Wall Street Journal, this would be the president’s second visit to the nation after his inauguration as Trump considers a trip to China. His first visit to the country had been during a wider Asian tour in 2017.
