After the South American country changed its policy on deportation flights, the Trump government last temporarily raised restrictions on Colombia.

In a statement, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Colombia’s administration “agreed to all of President Trump’s terms, including the unrestricted acceptance of all illegal aliens from Colombia returned from the United States, including on US military aircraft, without limitation or delay.”

Although Leavitt verified that the tariff measures would be “kept in reserve and not signed,” she remarked that Trump would maintain visa restrictions for Colombian officials and enforce improved customs inspections on Colombian products “until the first planeload of Colombian deportees is successfully returned.”

“Today’s circumstances show to the globe that America is once more respected. The statement further said President Trump will fiercely defend our country’s sovereignty and hopes other countries around the world will completely cooperate in accepting the removal of their nationals illegally in the United States“.

US-Colombia Tarrifs fights settled

After first rejection, Colombia changed its stance on deportation flights, causing Trump to react with penalties.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s decision to block two US military flights carrying deported immigrants and demand better US procedures for migrant handling sparked the disagreement.

A public exchange of statements followed, with Trump and Petro defending their respective positions. Petro declared a 25% rise in tariffs on American goods in reaction to what he claimed were US violations of dignity for migrants during deportation.

Petro organized for Colombia’s presidential planes to help in the “dignified return” of deported people under pressure from the US, his office statement notes. Furthermore set up by the Colombian government is a special team to monitor the compassionate treatment of repatriated citizens. For now, this settlement has stopped a full-fledged trade war from developing.
