Mark Carney, who is one of the favourites to replace Justin Trudeau as Canada’s Liberal Party leader, had in the past compared US President Donald Trump to “Voldemort,” the evil wizard from the Harry Potter novels. Carney made the comparison after Trump made a series of “51st state” claims regarding Canada, including referring to Trudeau as the Governor of the “51st state.
At a bar in Winnipeg recently, Carney had something to say about Trump’s insulting statements, stating, “When you consider what’s at stake in these absurd, insulting remarks of the president, of what we might be, I consider this the kind of Voldemort of remarks. I will not even quote it, but you know what I’m referring to.
Carney, a never-elected politician, has raised the most money and received the most endorsements within the Liberal Party. If he is elected, he will become the new Prime Minister over Trudeau, despite the fact that Carney has no experience in legislation. Even in the lead, Carney has a difficult decision regarding when to call a federal election following possibly winning.
Carney’s political career is marked by senior leadership positions in large financial institutions, such as a stint as Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, where he received acclaim for navigating the global financial crisis and Brexit. Following his departure in 2020, Carney was a UN envoy on finance and climate change.
