Pete Hegseth, Donald Trump’s nominee for Defense Secretary, was reportedly involved in a 2017 sexual assault investigation by the Monterey police. While no charges were filed, city officials confirmed an inquiry into an alleged incident following Hegseth’s speech at a Republican conference in California.
The alleged assault occurred at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa. Police have withheld the victim’s identity, and the details of the case remain unclear.
The Trump transition team was briefed on the allegations, with Chief of Staff Susie Wiles leading discussions. Sources revealed Hegseth characterized the incident as a “he-said, she-said” encounter. His lawyer, Timothy Parlatore, maintained that police found no evidence to support the claims.
Amid the scandal, questions have arisen about whether Hegseth was adequately vetted. A senior MAGA insider suggested he wasn’t thoroughly investigated, though Trump’s team denies this, claiming the incident didn’t surface during the vetting process.
Hegseth, an Army veteran and former Fox News host, has a history of divisive comments. Earlier this year, he criticized Gen. Charles Brown for allegedly pushing “radical” policies and opposed women serving in combat roles.
Hegseth’s nomination has sparked outrage, with critics questioning his suitability to lead the Pentagon. The Senate confirmation process is expected to be contentious.
Trump’s communications director, Steven Cheung, backed Hegseth, stating, “He has denied all accusations, and no charges were filed. We’re confident he will make America safe and great again as Secretary of Defense.”
