Trump Threatens Steep Tariffs on China if Taiwan is Invaded

Former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced that he would impose significant tariffs on China if the country invades Taiwan. In a recent interview, Trump stated, “If you go into Taiwan, I’m sorry to do this, I’m going to tax you, at 150% to 200%.”

Military Action Not Necessary, Says Trump

When questioned about possible military intervention in the event of a Chinese blockade of Taiwan, Trump expressed confidence that it wouldn’t be required. He attributed this to his strong relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping. “I had a very strong relationship with him. I wouldn’t have to (use military force), because he respects me and he knows I’m f— crazy,” Trump explained.

China’s Stance on Taiwan

China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to bring the island under its control. Taiwan, on the other hand, firmly opposes China’s claims.

Trump’s Tariff Plans in 2024 Campaign

As part of his economic strategy, Trump, who is campaigning for the 2024 election against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, also proposed broad tariffs ranging from 10% to 20% on all imports. He suggested that some tariffs on Chinese goods could exceed 60%, aiming to support US manufacturing.

Tariffs and Trade War Legacy

During his presidency from 2017 to 2021, Trump’s policies towards China were characterized by a series of tariffs, which triggered a trade war between the two countries.

Trump’s Claims on Russia and Ukraine

In the interview, Trump also reiterated his belief that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not have invaded Ukraine if he had been in office. He recounted a conversation with Putin, saying, “I said to Putin, ‘Vladimir, we have a great relationship. … If you go after Ukraine, I am going to hit you so hard, you’re not even going to believe it. I’m going to hit you right in the middle of fricking Moscow.'”
