Washington DC: US President Donald Trump has proposed the idea of the United States taking ownership of Ukrainian power plants to safeguard critical infrastructure and provide support to Ukraine’s energy system.

White House Confirmation

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed Trump’s proposal on Wednesday, following his conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“American ownership of those plants would be the best protection for that infrastructure and support for Ukrainian energy infrastructure,” Leavitt said during a press briefing.

Aim to Protect Ukrainian Energy Infrastructure

Trump’s suggestion comes as part of ongoing efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict and ensure long-term stability in Ukraine. According to Leavitt, American control of these power plants would safeguard Ukraine’s energy infrastructure from further attacks while ensuring consistent power supply for its citizens.

Strategic Move Amid Ongoing Conflict

Trump’s proposal aligns with the US strategy to strengthen Ukraine’s infrastructure while maintaining a significant influence over the region’s energy security.

“President Trump believes that securing Ukraine’s energy facilities under US ownership would prevent potential damage and contribute to the well-being of the Ukrainian people,” Leavitt added.

Broader Implications for US-Ukraine Relations

If implemented, this move could deepen US involvement in Ukraine’s internal energy sector, potentially improving bilateral relations while ensuring Ukraine’s energy stability during the ongoing conflict. However, the proposal might also raise concerns about sovereignty and external control over Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.
