US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday. It directs Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to revise the Pentagon’s policy on transgender troops. This action could eventually lead to a ban on their service. While Trump had previously attempted this during his first term, it was blocked by the courts and later overturned by former President Joe Biden.

Concerns on Military Readiness

Trump argued that troops identifying as a gender different from their biological one conflicts with military values. He explained that this harms readiness and undermines discipline. As a result, he has called for a new policy to address these concerns.

Court Challenges Expected

Transgender troops who previously fought the ban in court are expected to challenge this new policy as well. In addition, Trump signed an order to reinstate military personnel dismissed for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine. “We will offer full reinstatement to any service member who was expelled due to the vaccine mandate,” Trump stated in Miami. Although this order might not affect many, as only a few have re-enlisted since 2023, it could incur significant costs due to back pay.

DEI Initiatives and Rollbacks

Trump is also expected to address diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs within the Pentagon. His earlier orders removed such initiatives from federal agencies. These changes caused some disruptions, including the removal of training materials about the Tuskegee Airmen and Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) from the Air Force’s curriculum. However, these materials were later reinstated following public outcry.

Focus on Military Readiness

Hegseth emphasized that military training would now prioritize readiness. Furthermore, he discussed efforts to secure the U.S. border, which are part of the broader defense strategy.

Vaccine Mandate Background

Back in 2021, over 8,000 service members were dismissed for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine. Notices were sent out in 2023 offering them the chance to return. However, only a small number rejoined the military. To be reinstated, these individuals must meet specific fitness and medical standards, unless changes are made to the policies.

Trump’s Future Actions

Ultimately, these executive orders reflect Trump’s ongoing goal to reshape military policies. His focus remains on reinforcing traditional values and improving military readiness.
