President-elect Donald Trump has been interested in traveling to China following his assumption of office. He had during the campaign warned that he was going to put more tariffs on Chinese goods; however, plans to visit China and deepen the relationship with Beijing’s President Xi Jinping have already been discussed by Trump with advisors.
The reports suggest that he has been considering a trip to India. Discussions reportedly began when the External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited Washington DC around Christmas. The visit may take place as early as April or in the fall of this year, and it is possible that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may be invited to meet Trump at the White House.
A day ahead of these discussions, Trump had a telephone call with President Xi, terming it as ‘very good’.
“Just spoke to Chairman Xi Jinping of China,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “It is my expectation that we will solve many problems together, and starting immediately.” It discussed trade, fentanyl, and TikTok, and said, “President Xi and I will do everything possible to make the World more peaceful and safe!”
Vice-President Han Zheng of China is scheduled to attend Trump’s inauguration-the first time that a senior Chinese official will do so.
