Donald Trump Jr has caused controversy after visiting Nuuk, Greenland, with allegations that some guests at a lunch he hosted were not supporters but homeless people who were lured by the promise of free food. Trump Jr visited the capital of Greenland just days after his father, President-elect Donald Trump, stated that US control of Greenland was one of his priorities.
During their lunch at Hotel Hans Egede, participants wore “Make America Great Again” hats during the meeting while Trump Jr put his father on speakerphone. The president-elect assured the group, “We’re going to treat you well.” However, Jorgen Bay-Kastrup, the CEO of the hotel, revealed many of them were not actual Trump supporters but homeless people whom his team met on the street.
“They had just met them and invited them for lunch. I don’t think they knew who they were inviting,” Bay-Kastrup said, adding that most of the participants had probably never entered the hotel as it was not cheap. The group consisted of about 15 people and dined on traditional Greenlandic cuisine, Bay-Kastrup explained, though he said they were not aware who Trump Jr was until later.
A spokesperson for Trump Jr rejected the allegations as “beyond the pale ridiculous.” The visit came amid heightened discussions over US interest in purchasing Greenland. Even though Greenland and Denmark have repeatedly denied such intentions, Republicans have drafted the “Make Greenland Great Again Act” to consider purchasing the territory.
Meanwhile, there were reports of individuals in Maga caps handing out $100 bills near a supermarket. Jacob Nordstrom, a local resident, told the press after his 11-year-old son came home with a $100 bill that it was “borderline shocking.”
Political operative Arthur Schwartz responded to the controversy with a dismissal, saying that, given that Trump Jr is constantly followed by cameras, the allegations are impossible.
