US President Donald Trump stated Thursday that he is confident Russian President Vladimir Putin will honor any peace deal negotiated with Ukraine, even as Moscow continues its three-year invasion.

Speaking at the White House during a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump was optimistic about the potential for negotiating a deal. “He will keep his word,” Trump said, according to AFP.

Starmer showed up at the White House just after midday in a Black Escalade, where he was greeted warmly by Trump. The two leaders shared handshakes and smiles before speaking to the press. Asked if he could broker a peace agreement in Ukraine, Trump said with confidence, “Yes, we can, we will,” thumbs-up while Starmer stood by his side.

Ceasefire Before Security Commitments

While they were debating, Trump reiterated that a ceasefire has to be established in Ukraine before international peacekeepers can be deployed. His comments indicated a difference with European leaders, who push for security measures to be part of ceasefire talks. Starmer did not indicate whether he would ask for security guarantees from the US for European peacekeeping missions in Ukraine.

Invitation for a State Visit

The gathering also saw talks of US-UK relations, with Starmer inviting Trump for a state visit to Britain. Trump accepted, saying he would visit the UK “in the near future.” Starmer brought the invitation by King Charles, describing it as a “really special” move as the leaders talked of Western support for Ukraine during ongoing diplomatic efforts.
