US President Donald Trump revealed that Boeing secured the contract to develop the Air Force’s next-generation F-47 fighter jet on Friday. This decision marks a major step in enhancing America’s air combat capabilities.
Boeing Wins After Intense Competition
Trump emphasized that the selection process was highly competitive. “After a rigorous and thorough competition between some of America’s top aerospace companies, the Air Force is going to be awarding the contract for the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) platform to Boeing,” he told reporters in the Oval Office.
This contract is especially significant because it will replace the aging F-22 Raptor, which has served the Air Force for over two decades. Moreover, the F-47 will introduce state-of-the-art technology and work alongside uncrewed drones, making it a groundbreaking addition, according to AFP.
Trump Keeps Deal Cost Confidential
Although Trump declined to disclose the total cost due to security concerns, reports suggest the initial contract for the Air Force version is valued at around $20 billion. This investment highlights the government’s commitment to securing long-term air superiority.
Why Is the F-47 Important?
The F-47 is designed to replace the F-22 Raptor, a stealth fighter that has been in operation since the early 2000s. More importantly, this next-generation jet will bring unparalleled advancements in technology.
According to AFP, the F-47 will function alongside uncrewed drones, offering greater flexibility and enhanced combat readiness. Consequently, the Air Force will gain a highly adaptable and powerful fighter jet capable of handling a wide range of missions.
First Crewed Sixth-Generation Fighter
Notably, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David W. Allvin described the F-47 as the most advanced, lethal, and adaptable fighter ever built. “It is designed to outpace, outmanoeuvre, and outmatch any adversary that dares to challenge the US’s air capabilities,” he said.
Furthermore, he pointed out that the F-47 is the world’s first crewed sixth-generation fighter. As a result, it will dominate even the most dangerous battle environments.
Additionally, the US Air Force highlighted that the F-47 will feature greater range, improved stealth, and enhanced sustainability compared to existing fifth-generation fighters. Unlike the F-22 Raptor, the F-47 will be cheaper to maintain and more adaptable to future threats.
US Air Force Reinforces Air Superiority
As global threats evolve, the US Air Force remains focused on maintaining air dominance.
Earlier this month, Major General Joseph Kunkel emphasized the critical need for air superiority. He referenced a study conducted after a temporary halt in the NGAD program, which concluded that air dominance is essential for national security—past, present, and future.
Moreover, the study confirmed that there is no viable alternative to the NGAD platform in ensuring the United States retains control of the skies.
NGAD Program Resumes After 2024 Pause
Previously, in 2024, the NGAD program faced a temporary suspension due to budget concerns. At the time, the Trump administration prioritized cutting costs and tasked billionaire donor Elon Musk—through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—with reducing government spending.
Now, with Boeing leading the project, the US Air Force is back on track to strengthen its air combat power for the future.
