Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with King Charles at Sandringham to discuss key issues concerning Canada’s future. Their conversation took place against the backdrop of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated calls for Canada to become “the 51st US state.” While Canada has strongly rejected this idea, King Charles, Canada’s head of state, has not publicly commented on the matter.
Trudeau shared a photo from the meeting on X, emphasizing their discussion about Canada’s independence.
“I met with His Majesty King Charles III this morning. We spoke about matters of importance to Canadians — including, above all, Canada’s sovereign and independent future,” Trudeau wrote.
Although details of the private discussion remain undisclosed, the Associated Press reported that Trump’s annexation threat was among the topics covered.
Trump’s Tariff Plans and Annexation Proposal
In addition to the annexation controversy, Trump’s administration has announced a 25% tariff on Canadian goods, citing concerns over drug imports into the U.S. Mexico is also expected to face similar tariff policies starting Tuesday.
Trump first suggested Canada should become part of the U.S. in December last year, promising tax breaks for Canadians and even proposing NHL legend Wayne Gretzky as a potential leader.
“I just left Wayne Gretzky, ‘The Great One’ as he is known in Ice Hockey circles, a message. I said, ‘Wayne, why don’t you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada – You would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign,’” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Since taking office in January, Trump has reiterated this idea several times, gaining support from his close ally, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. However, Canadian leaders across political lines have strongly opposed the notion.
