Tajikistan Hit By 4.6 Magnitude Earthquake

A 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck Tajikistan late Wednesday night, as reported by the National Centre of Seismology (NCS). According to NCS data, the quake occurred on November 27 at 11:01 PM Indian Standard Time (IST) at a depth of 80 kilometers. The epicenter was located at latitude 37.21°N and longitude 71.49°E.

The information was also shared on X (formerly Twitter).

The earthquake struck the Pamir Mountain range near the Garam Chashma hot springs, close to Tajikistan’s border with Afghanistan. This marks the eighth earthquake to hit Tajikistan within 30 days, as per the NCS.

A previous World Bank report highlighted that the entirety of Tajikistan lies in a seismically active zone. It observed, “The territory of the Republic of Tajikistan refers in its entirety to a seismically active zone.” The report further noted that 50% of the country is situated in zones prone to 9-magnitude seismic activity, 38% in 8-magnitude zones, and 12% in 7-magnitude zones.

In terms of population distribution, the report stated that 73.7% of Tajikistan’s 8 million residents live in areas with seismic zones of 8-9 magnitudes, while only 26.3% reside in 7-magnitude zones. The report also underscored the significant toll that earthquakes have taken on human lives and the country’s economy in recent years.
