A tragic accident occurred in Brazil’s São Conrado region, where 49-year-old skydiving instructor Jose de Alencar Lima Junior lost his life after a fatal fall during a speed fly attempt. Lima, a seasoned skydiving instructor with 20 years of experience, was attempting the extreme sport, which is similar to paragliding, when the incident took place.
Lima had launched from Pedra Bonita, near Rio de Janeiro, when he lost his balance right after deploying his parachute. In a viral video, a woman’s voice can be heard expressing concern, saying, “Guys, I am worried.” Moments later, Lima fell nearly 820 feet, landing on the rocks below.
Witnesses, according to the New York Post, suggested Lima may have tripped on a hole just before his fall, potentially causing him to lose control. Authorities are also investigating whether equipment failure played a role in the incident.
The Clube São Conrado de Voo Livre (CSCLV), responsible for managing the region’s launch sites, stated that Lima had not followed the proper procedure, as he did not use the designated ramp for his jump but instead took off from a trail, which they noted is unsuitable and prohibited for such activities. The CSCLV added, “With that clarification, may the pilot rest in peace.”
