Putin Praises Bollywood, Plans Film Fest & Music Collaboration With India

Moscow [Russia], October 18: Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Bollywood and its massive following in Russia during a media briefing ahead of the upcoming BRICS Summit. He expressed admiration for Indian cinema, noting its immense popularity across the country.

Bollywood’s Popularity in Russia

When asked about Russia’s plans to incentivize BRICS nations for shooting films within its borders, Putin responded enthusiastically. He acknowledged that Indian films enjoy the highest viewership in Russia, stating, “We have a special TV channel dedicated to Indian films, showing them around the clock.” He further emphasized the mutual cultural ties, explaining that both nations share an interest in similar film themes, such as the rags-to-riches storylines and clear moral distinctions between good and evil.

Film Festivals and Collaborative Efforts

Putin highlighted Russia’s ongoing efforts to promote Indian films, mentioning the BRICS Film Festival and the Moscow International Film Festival’s inclusion of films from BRICS countries. He suggested that Russia would readily support Indian film productions, provided there was mutual interest. “If Indian films want to be part of this, we will find common ground and promote them here,” he added.

Proposing New Collaborations: Film and Music Festivals

The Russian President also hinted at potential future collaborations, including music festivals. He stressed the importance of creating open platforms for artistic exchanges, where artists from BRICS nations, including India, China, and Ethiopia, could showcase their work. “Together, we will organize music festivals and theatrical arts events,” Putin said, revealing plans to create a cinema academy.

Bollywood’s Cultural Impact in Russia

Bollywood films have had a longstanding cultural impact in Russia, with classics like Disco Dancer (1982) and Awaara (1951) captivating Russian audiences. Raj Kapoor’s films, in particular, left a lasting impression, with Awaara becoming a cultural phenomenon when it premiered. Russian thinkers, poets, and artists have often been inspired by India’s films and culture.

Looking Forward to Discussions with Modi

Putin concluded by expressing his readiness to discuss these cultural and economic proposals with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his upcoming visit to Russia for the 16th BRICS Summit, scheduled for October 22-23 in Kazan. He was confident that the collaboration would strengthen ties between the two nations, particularly in the realms of film, music, and cultural exchange.
