PM Modi’s Historic Guyana Visit: 10 MoUs Inked On Agriculture, Defence, UPI, And More

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Guyana marked a milestone in India-Guyana relations as both nations signed 10 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), enhancing collaboration in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, defence, and digital innovation.

Key Highlights of the Agreements

1. Hydrocarbon Cooperation

A strategic partnership was established in the hydrocarbons sector, focusing on crude sourcing, natural gas projects, and infrastructure development, along with expertise sharing across the hydrocarbon value chain.

2. Agriculture Development

The nations agreed on joint activities in agriculture and allied sectors, including the exchange of scientific expertise to boost agricultural innovation and productivity.

3. Digital Transformation through UPI

India’s UPI system is set to revolutionize digital transactions in Guyana through an MoU between NPCI International Payments Ltd and Guyana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The partnership will pilot real-time payment systems and drive digital transformation.

4. Pharmaceutical and Medical Collaboration

– A significant MoU was signed for recognizing Indian Pharmacopoeia Regulations to improve medicine standards.
– The Janaushadhi Scheme will bring affordable medicines to CARICOM countries.
– Frameworks were established to regulate medical devices, cosmetics, and biological products.

5. Defence and National Security

An agreement between Guyana’s National Defence Institute (NDI) and India’s Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) aims to enhance education, research, and training in defence and security studies.

6. Cultural Exchange Programme

To celebrate cultural heritage, a programme was signed to promote collaboration in theatre, music, literature, and museum development from 2024 to 2027.

7. Broadcasting Cooperation

Prasar Bharati and Guyana’s National Communications Network will exchange programs on culture, science, and sports, strengthening ties through media collaboration.
