PM Modi Meets Iranian President: Calls For Peace, Protection Of Civilians

Kazan [Russia], October 23 – In a significant diplomatic engagement at the BRICS Summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, with discussions focusing on escalating tensions in West Asia, the protection of civilians, and regional cooperation.

PM Modi’s Call for Civilian Protection Amid Escalating Conflict

During the meeting, PM Modi expressed deep concern about the escalating conflict in West Asia. He emphasized India’s commitment to the protection of civilians and preventing further harm. “Dialogue and diplomacy are key to de-escalating tensions,” Modi reiterated, underlining India’s stance on peaceful resolution. President Pezeshkian echoed similar sentiments, calling for peace and harmony in the region and noting India’s diplomatic role.

Focus on Afghanistan’s Stability

Both leaders also discussed the situation in Afghanistan, stressing the importance of maintaining peace and stability. PM Modi highlighted India’s continued humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, while President Pezeshkian praised India’s contributions to Iran’s accession to multilateral platforms like the SCO and BRICS.

Deepening India-Iran Bilateral Relations

This meeting marked the first between the two leaders since Pezeshkian took office. PM Modi congratulated the Iranian President on his recent election and reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening its historical and civilizational ties with Iran. Both leaders emphasized the shared cultural connections that underpin their longstanding bilateral relationship.

Strategic Cooperation on Chabahar Port and INSTC

A key focus of the meeting was the ongoing collaboration between India and Iran on the Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). PM Modi highlighted the importance of enhancing regional connectivity and economic partnerships through these projects, which are crucial for linking Central Asian markets and promoting trade. The recent signing of the long-term main contract for Chabahar Port was seen as a significant step forward in regional cooperation.

India’s Role in BRICS and Regional Diplomacy

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, briefing on the discussions, emphasized the fruitful and strategic nature of the meeting. He noted that both leaders discussed ways to enhance cooperation within multilateral frameworks like BRICS and the SCO, with a focus on shared regional interests.

Looking Ahead: Strengthening Connectivity and Trade

Both India and Iran reaffirmed their commitment to seamless regional connectivity. PM Modi acknowledged the logistical challenges but emphasized the strategic importance of linking Chabahar to the INSTC for promoting economic ties with Central Asia and Europe.

As PM Modi concludes his second visit to Russia this year, the discussions at the BRICS Summit are expected to play a significant role in shaping India’s foreign policy and regional partnerships moving forward.
