Petition for New General Election Gathers Over 1.7 Million Signatures in UK

A petition calling for a new general election in the UK has gained significant support. It has already reached over 1.7 million signatures, as public dissatisfaction grows with the Labour government. Even Elon Musk shared the petition, amplifying its reach.

Petition Calls for Action

The petition, started by Michael Westwood, criticizes the Labour government for not fulfilling its promises from the last election. The petition’s description states, “I would like there to be another General Election. I believe the current Labour Government have gone back on the promises they laid out in the lead up to the last election.”

As of the latest update, the petition has gathered 1,771,423 signatures. Westwood, the owner of the Wagon and Horses pub, was surprised by the petition’s success. He never expected Elon Musk to repost it. Musk’s message read, “The General Election petition has now DESTROYED the 200k target within 6 hours-just after midnight in Britain. The British people are about to completely humiliate the Labour Party.”

Labour’s Falling Popularity

The petition reflects growing frustration with the Labour government. A recent Ipsos poll reveals that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s popularity has dropped sharply since the elections. Nearly half of the public (49%) now view the Labour Party unfavorably, falling behind the Conservative Party by three points. Furthermore, two in five Britons believe their financial situation has worsened since Labour came to power.

Westwood also criticized the Labour government for not living up to its promises. He explained, “I think people have had enough. People have seen what’s happened over in America, and I think that’s had a knock-on effect. If people stand together and vote, we can make a change.”

Widespread Public Discontent

Public opinion shows a clear sense of dissatisfaction. A majority (56%) of the public believes Britain is heading in the wrong direction. Only 19% feel the country is improving. This suggests a growing sense of pessimism and a strong desire for change.

The petition is a response to these concerns, with many Britons calling for a new election to address the issues they see with the current government.
